The film reels containing three commercials Andy Warhol made in 1965 for Cadence laxative were sold in 2019 by ad man Ira Sturtevant's second wife, Meg Crane. But they were made when he was married to his first wife, Elaine, aka, Sturtevant, who was, at that very moment, staging her groundbreaking show at the Bianchini Gallery, which included entire walls of Flowers paintings, which she made using Warhol's own screen.

Lin May Saeed über
Markus Ebner Grüne Intervalle, 2010, Acrylic paint and vinyl, paint on panel, 70 x 79 cm Recently I was talking to a friend who is not in the art field and tried to explain Markus Ebner's approach to her. In doing so, I realized how much I appreciate its provocation, at the same time, inherent dedication to its subject, and the refusal to accept the expectation that an artist should place himself at the center of the work. His practice is also a constant reflection on loss. Markus Ebner dedicates his work to his former painting professor Gunter Fruhtrunk (1923 - 1982), with whom he studied at the Munich Art Academy. Unfortunately, he died by suicide when Markus Ebner was in his 3rd semester of study. Since many years Markus Ebner repeats all the paintings of Günter Fruhtrunk. He paints them himself, the sizes and techniques are as close as possible to the works of Fruhtrunk, the work titles are the same. Günter Fruhtrunk was a well-known non-figurative painter of his generation. In 1968 he participated in the 34th Venice Biennale and Dokumenta 4, followed later by solo exhibitions at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and Lenbachhaus Munich. His paintings and serigraphs are little known today. One commissioned work in particular, the iconic design for the plastic bags of the Aldi Group, is known to a wider public. After I moved to Berlin, I was lucky enough to see an artist talk with Elaine Sturtevant at the NBK.As she spoke about her life, I understood her practice of appropriation as a kind of empowerment and claiming of agency from (mostly male) famous fellow artists. After the lecture ended, she was verbally assaulted by a visitor during the Q&A session. Sturtevant remained calm and replied, "Why do you attack me?". Talking about Markus Ebner's practice with fellow artists is again different and can lead to a controversial discussion, perhaps because he only works about one single artist, his former teacher. It raises even more fundamental questions of artistic autonomy and apparently leaves no one indifferent.

STURTEVANT (Estados Unidos, 1924)

The works of Elaine Sturtevant (known by her surname) cause a double take; what at first looks like a painting by Andy Warhol or Jasper Johns is actually her own work, appropriating the forms and techniques of the original to a disturbing degree of accuracy. Since 1964, Sturtevant has appropriated the work of her male contemporaries to question the hierarchy of gender, originality, and authorship, as well as the structures of art and culture. In fact, Warhol even acquiesced to let Sturtevant use his screen maker to produce the same Marilyn screen that he used in his own work. As Sturtevant recalls, when Warhol was asked the details of his process, he would tell people to "ask Elaine."
